The village of Bari Kowt has a fairly large school with about 400 students. The facility is new but under supplied. It would be help us connect with this population and demonstrate the benefits of working with the government.
School supplies of all sorts are needed, but what is most necessary are notebooks and pens/pencils. Also required are pencil sharpeners, staples/staplers, tape, and bookbags.
If we could get 400 notebooks and 800 pens/pencils, that would be a fantastic start.
Be sure to mark on the outside of the package that it is intended for the Bari Kowt School. |
Since leaving COP Lowell, I have been redeployed to Kunar province, right along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. It is extremely poor, has a unique mix of many tribal groups (Nuristanis, Pashtuns, Gojers, and others all live in close contact with each other), and a significant Al-Qaeda/Taliban stronghold. Safe to say, it has been a tough place for us and relatively undeveloped by US Forces. Many in the area have not seen US soldiers for more than a year if ever. Right now, we are trying hard to win the support of the local population, and most importantly, demonstrate to them that cooperating with the government is to their advantage. Improving security is our priority, but we also are seeking to improve the roads and access to basic services in this area as well.
One of the ways we'd like to do this is to help local schools. We've found that many kids come to class with virtually nothing--not even pencils and paper. Because of this, school supplies of all sorts are needed. What is most necessary are notebooks and pens/pencils. Also required are pencil sharpeners, staples/staplers, tape, and bookbags. |
